Viburnum x burkwoodii ‘Conoy’
2013 Theodore Klein Plant Award Winners
Viburnum x burkwoodii ‘Conoy’ is a selection from the cross of V. utile with V. x burkwoodii 'Park Farm Hybrid' made in 1968 by the late Dr. Donald Egolf. 'Conoy' was named and released by the U.S. National Arboretum in 1988. It’s compact, tight habit, 4-5' tall and 7-8' wide, and glossy foliage make it ideal for today’s smaller landscapes. The creamy white flowers in April are followed by pendulous clusters of red berry-like drupes which ripen in August and persist into the fall before turning black. The foliage has a maroon-burgundy blush in winter that adds to the versatility of ‘Conoy’ Viburnum. In 1997 it was awarded the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal Plant Award. Every yard needs a viburnum, the flowering habit of ‘Conoy’ would make it the first choice. Other Theodore Klein Plant Award Winners by Dr. Don Egold ‘Mohawk’ (2006) and‘Eskimo’ (2001) have also been selected for the Theodore Klein Plant Award as has the excellent blue-fruited, glossy fall maroon foliaged Viburnum utile‘Winterthur’ (2000) . Too many choices and there are more.
