Corylopsis spicata Spike Winterhazel
2014 Theodore Klein Plant Award Winners
Corylopsis spicata - Spike Winterhazel is outstanding for sun or part shade. It forms a broad shrub to 6’-8’ tall and wide. It can get taller as is evident in the image from Cheekwood, Nashville, TN. It produces delicate chartreuse flowers in early spring offering a light fragrance. Fall color is a delightful yellow. Mike Dirr says [it] "ranks at the top of my list as an early-flowering shrub." There are several examples in Kentucky including one planted by Buddy Hubbuch in Bernheim Arboretum that plantpeople have observed for many years.
