Buxus sempervirens ‘Dee Runk’ - Dee Runk Boxwood
2013 Theodore Klein Plant Award Winners
Buxus sempervirens, common box, is the most widely used boxwood in Kentucky. The cultivar 'Dee Runk' is an excellent upright cultivar, with dark green foliage. Grown for both its form and ability to thrive in a variety of site conditions it will grow to an approximate height of 8’ to 10’ and width of 2 ½’ to 3’. This plant would make an excellent privacy hedge or can be grown in containers. Boxwoods are attractive plants that seem to be deer resistant and will tolerate pollution. Common Box readily roots from cuttings, spring or summer soft-wood cuttings, semi-hardwood in late summer or fall and hardwood cuttings in winter, treated with 1000 ppm IBA (Dirr) or 2,500-5,000 (Hartmann, et al). Hardy to zones 6-8. It was the highest rated upright cultivar of highly recommended Dee Runk (4.37), Graham Blandy (29), Fastigiata (4.23), John Baldwin (4.05) in the National Boxwood Trials Report of 2011.
