Asarum canadense
Asarum canadense L. Wild Ginger, Canadian Wild Ginger, in the Aristolochiaceae (Birthwort Family). It is a spreading deciduous native herbaceous perennial. Wild Ginger makes a great seasonal ground cover and is known for it's hardiness. Allan Armtage says it is "aggressive." In our case we know rodents can help spread it to other areas of the garden with their winter activities. It is very atttractive and the fuzzy/downy leaves and stems seem to give it greater visual substance. The bloom is red-brown and found on the ground originating from the leaf axil. To see the bloom requires moving leaves.
