Arisaema dracontium - Green Dragon
Arisaema dracontium - Green Dragon is a Kentucky native called "uncommon" in Tom Barnes book but it occurs frequently where found in low (drainage areas near the west Kentucky lakes and rivers) moist shaded areas. The foliage, a single compound leaf with 7-15 oblong leaflets that stand atop 1-2 foot tall stems in the wild; up to 3 feet in the landscape. The bloom, a the spathe (flower) and spadix (tail-like sturcture), rises to equal height. Green Dragon will survive in imperfect siting but they struggle and rarely get the height and leaf size that makes them interesting in the wild. An ideal site would duplicate the shady well mulched forest floor where they are normally found.
