Acer triflorum- Three-flower Maple
2002 Theodore Klein Plant Award Winner
Acer triflorum is a small tree. A mature landscape tree can be 20-30 feet tall with an equal spread. The bark is tan and exfoliates in rather uniform vertical peels. The actual curl of the bark is short. The bark characteristic is considered equally with the interesting foliage. The trifoliate leaves turn from a dark green to an excellent golden fall color. Plants men and women frequently mention this plant as a favorite small tree with good size characteristics for the urban landscape and excellent ornamental habit, foliage, and bark. Dr. Michael Dirr calls it "one of my favorites;-".
